Haiku: for Flute Duet

After Hokusai by Carey Blyton is a unique group of pieces for two flutes, which are delightful, musical translations of their nature titles.

After Hokusai - Flute music

If you should decide to program After Hokusai, please feel free to read aloud the Haiku I wrote for each movement as part of your performance. My duet partner and I, Windsong Flute Duet, performed this at the annual Bird Fest Concert in Leavenworth, Washington. The audience loved the combination of music and spoken word!

Cormorant in Snow

icy snow sparkles
cormorant takes flight, black, white
snowflakes dust open wings

Carp in Waterfall

crashing waterfall
carp gliding reflects sunlight
sparkling music

Azaleas and Cuckoo

color of pink blooms
bird sounds echo, hammering
fill up sight and sound

Peonies and Butterfly

wind flutters flowers
butterfly touches petals
sights, sounds, nature’s life

Frog on Old Tile

pond, windy water
moving reeds, lilies, frog hops
green on old tile edge

What is haiku?

A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. OR… A poem in English written in the form of a haiku.

Flute During the Covid Pandemic

Kermit, an 85-year-old flute player, has really missed playing his usual music, wind ensemble and busking, during the pandemic. Instead he often goes outside and plays his flute among his beautiful flowers to keep in practice while enjoying our Southern California weather and the garden. The neighbors, far from complaining, seem to enjoy it too.

On the Fourth of July he played a moveable patriotic concert. He would pull up in friends’ driveways where he would play the National Anthem and a couple of other patriotic songs. The friends would come out on the porch and cheer him on, keeping a social distance. People seemed truly delighted with his performance. He felt happy also to take the music to our friends and to celebrate the holiday. Sharing his music has helped him stay upbeat during the Covid pandemic.
