Play for a fee or play for free?
A consideration when planning a performance is whether you want to be paid or not. Different events and venues, will bring this topic to light. The Columbia River Community Flute Choir usually plays for free. It makes us feel like we are doing something for the community and takes away some of the feeling of needing to be really good because we are being paid. We have taken donations on occasion, which we have used to purchase music.
If you decide you would like to be paid, be sure you have a fee schedule showing how much for how long a performance and if that varies by type of gig, i.e. Christmas at the Mall vs. a wedding, or Senior Living location. You will need to have planned whether the money collected goes to the flute choir for music, instruments, gas for travel etc. and whether part of that is a fee for the director. Be sure to track this income as a part of a private studio or the flute choir itself if it is a separate business.
